Sheela Murthy is grateful to her adopted country for all the ways it has contributed to her success, and she’s made a personal commitment to give back to the community whenever she can. Her contributions take many forms. Ms. Murthy provides leadership to important institutions – like the United Way, the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, and Stevenson University – and gives substantial financial support to these and other worthy causes through the MurthyNAYAK Foundation. She is generous in sharing her knowledge as well, often lecturing on immigration to fellow practitioners and others who can benefit from her extensive knowledge and expertise.

On October 26, Murthy will speak to Professor David Barbe’s graduate class on technology startup ventures, addressing various aspects of immigration law as it applies to students, workers, and entrepreneurs in the high-tech sector: student and H1B visas, employer-sponsored green cards, the rules for hiring people from different countries, and other matters related to starting a high-tech company. Professor Barbe directs the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute – also known as “Mtech” – at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

Mtech serves as a bridge between academic research and the marketplace, offering programs, course and workshops to help aspiring entrepreneurs to get their innovations out of the lab and onto the market. It works in partnership with business, government, and private-sector organizations to put university expertise and real-world business savvy at the disposal of budding high-tech entrepreneurs. Several advanced biotech and communications companies have found success in the market after their founders graduated from Mtech’s incubator. All of this is good for our state and its burgeoning technology sector. Murthy is delighted to help the next generation of high-tech entrepreneurs get their start, right here in Maryland.
