Murthy Kicks Off Fundraising Drive for International Education

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, was the featured speaker, at the International Week Global Lecture Series at the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) on November 15th. Murthy, who is honorary chair of CCBC’s Global Education Initiative, spoke about her path “From Immigrant to Expert,” tracing her personal journey from India to Baltimore, from student to successful immigrant entrepreneur, with stops at Harvard Law School and several prestigious law firms along the way. Having personally benefited from an international education – and no small amount of hard work – Murthy spoke passionately about her commitment to educational opportunity, and the need to equip students with the international skills and perspectives that are essential for success in today’s global economy.

Murthy also was on hand to kick off CCBC’s Challenge Grant fund drive, to support a new Center for Global Education, to be housed in the historic Hilton Mansion on CCBC’s Catonsville campus. Last year, CCBC was one of six community colleges in the country that received a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant. The $500,000 NEH grant requires CCBC to raise an additional $1 million to fully fund the Center for Global Education.

The Center for Global Education is designed to increase global awareness at CCBC, to infuse global learning into the curriculum and into internationally-themed events. Its foundational insight: understanding other cultures not only enriches our lives by opening us to new experiences, it enables us to reach across barriers of language, politics, history, and beliefs, to communicate more effectively and get things done in a complex cross-cultural environment. The new center will provide a focus for global education on campus, featuring state-of-the-art seminar and training rooms, as well as meeting and hospitality space for the CCBC community and its guests from around the world.

As the largest community college in Maryland, with more than 70,000 students at its three campuses and many extension centers, CCBC makes a substantial impact on the state’s economy and industrial base. It is the largest provider of higher education and workforce training in the Baltimore metro area. Sheela Murthy is deeply committed to CCBC’s Global Education Initiative, and proud to lend a hand to make it a success. Further information on the program is available online.
