One of the most neglected dimensions of homelessness is access to medical care. People experiencing homelessness often live with untreated chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders, yet face enormous barriers to care, including lack of insurance, transportation, identification, and continuity with providers.
Preventive care is rare, so manageable conditions frequently escalate into medical emergencies. Emergency rooms become the default, costly, and ineffective point of care, offering temporary relief but little follow-up. Without stable housing, storing medications, attending appointments, or recovering from illness becomes nearly impossible, trapping individuals in a cycle where poor health both causes and deepens homelessness.
The MurthyNAYAK Foundation has made an initial donation to the Mission House Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, supporting its vital work in providing compassionate, comprehensive medical care to underserved communities. They provide essential services, including adult and senior health care, diagnosis and treatment of illness, select women’s health services, chronic disease management for conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure, as well as access to limited medications and specialist referrals.
Mission House Clinic is a free and charitable Florida clinic serving uninsured, low-income residents of Duval County. Founded on the belief that no one should go unseen or uncared for, the clinic focuses on chronic disease management and reducing unnecessary emergency room visits. Direct donations like this one help sustain the supplies, medications, and dedicated staff needed to serve nearly 350 patients each year.
